The pause heard across three continents
Why the Fed, the ECB and the Bank of England all blinked in the same week.
The consensus was so orderly it made economists suspicious. Within twenty hours of each other, the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England all left their benchmark rates unchanged, and all three used variations on the same phrase: risks are now balanced.
What the data actually said
The euro area print came in at 2.9%, a whisker below the ECB's own forecast and the first sub-3 reading in almost three years. The US number was 3.1%. In the UK it was 3.4% — still uncomfortable, but no longer accelerating.
